Climate-Resilient Livelihood Support for Vulnerable Women-Led Families

Climad Bangladesh Foundation is implementing a livelihood support initiative for vulnerable families living in climate-vulnerable areas of Bangladesh, with a particular focus on poor women-headed households. The project aims to strengthen household resilience, improve food and nutrition security, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for economically disadvantaged families.

Under the initiative, selected women-headed households receive 10–15 layer chicks, vegetable seeds for homestead cultivation, and fruit tree saplings. These interventions are designed to provide families with practical, low-cost livelihood opportunities that can generate additional income while improving household food security.

The poultry component enables women to raise chickens, increase their flock over time, and gradually develop small-scale poultry enterprises. As the number of chickens grows, families can benefit from selling eggs and poultry, creating opportunities for increased household income. Similarly, homestead vegetable cultivation reduces the need for families to purchase vegetables regularly from local markets, thereby reducing household expenditure and improving access to fresh and nutritious food.

The distribution of fruit tree saplings contributes to both household nutrition and environmental sustainability. As the trees mature, families will have access to locally grown fruits while contributing to increased greenery and biodiversity around their homes. Collectively, these interventions not only contribute to the economic empowerment of women but also help meet household requirements for protein, vitamins, and other essential nutrients.

The project is initially being implemented in coastal and Barind areas of Bangladesh, where communities are particularly vulnerable to climate-related challenges. Based on the experience and learning generated during the initial phase, the initiative will gradually be expanded to other climate-vulnerable regions across Bangladesh. In future phases, the project will also explore the inclusion of additional livestock support to further diversify household livelihoods and strengthen the economic resilience of vulnerable families.

Through an integrated approach combining poultry rearing, homestead vegetable cultivation, fruit tree plantation, and livestock-based livelihood opportunities, Climad Bangladesh Foundation seeks to build more resilient, self-reliant, and economically empowered families in climate-vulnerable communities across Bangladesh.

 The project will improve the livelihoods of climate-vulnerable families by increasing household income, reducing food expenses, and improving access to nutritious food. It will empower women through sustainable livelihood opportunities, while poultry, vegetable cultivation, and fruit plantation will strengthen food security, nutrition, household resilience, and environmental sustainability.
